In practice, however, it is meant to be a form of disrespect. Not only is the person's new-ness being pointed out, but also it is made clear that this is causing a problem, regardless of whether it is intentional or can be helped.

The newbcake is a very rare honour given to only those who show above average noobishness. Most Newbcakes are arrogant and just do not seem to want to leave CompSci.ca even after receiving such a rank. It is believed that there is a secret society of the noob and that some day they will try to rule the earth but fail miserably after forgetting to null terminate their strings. The Newbcake rank is one of CompSci.ca's special [[Ranks]] and can only be gain through the magical powers that be.

Going along with Japan's love of all things weird, and the past success of [[Dance Dance Revolution]], BioWare decided to open a new studio in the land of the rising sun to see what they could come up with.

==Gameplay==
Players start by choosing a Character and a location. The player then tries to navigate through the Location by keeping as close to the behaviour of their chosen Character as they can. Closer matches of the player's behaviour to the Character's results in more points, while straying too far from the Character's behaviour can result in failing the Location. Locations vary in difficulty, from Candlekeep (easy) to Baldur's Gate (difficult).

Evasive Maneuvers is a spaceship fighter game, writen in [[Turing]] by [[Coutsos]] (previously known as Mazer). It is considered to be one of the best games ever made in Turing.

The post was originally made in June of 2003 the day after Mazer handed it in to his Computer Science teacher as his final project and had to let it go. After an initial reaction of confusion by the community, Mazer realised that some instructions would be necessary for those not already familiar with the game's interface (Evasive Maneuvers often attracted a small group of regular players to the computer lab each day at lunchtime during it's creation), and the game seemed to be fairly well received.

Or too well received? On numerous occassions Mazer was asked for the source code to the game, and while he had no great dislike for open source software there was still the concern of abuse and plagiarism by lazy highschool students. After becoming quite fed up with these requests and the constant reviving of the topic from several pages back, Mazer (a moderator at this point) decided to put an end the madness and lock the topic.

Afterwards, Mazer chose to unlock the topic, for unkown reasons. For a time it lay in peace in the depths of time, until one day somebody brought it back up. It was locked again, and this time the topic's name was disguised. For a time, the topic was actually called "Marvel vs Capcom (Ryu/Strider Hiryu owns your mothers)" which reflected Mazer's new hobby of playing Marvel vs Capcom with MAME during his CS class and his self-identification with the mentioned characters. Some time afterwards, Mazer received a private message from a user about getting the source code. In response, Mazer said some mildly rude and regretful things, and began to seek greater protection of the thread's rest.

It was around this time that Mazer had come across an old Japanese film called "Zatoichi" and was somehow inspired to write about it. Using all of the bad spelling, grammar, and punctuation he could muster, he edited the original post for Evasive Maneuvers to a description of the movie, as though written by an AOLer, finishing with what appears to be a [[noob]]'s assumption that he's about to receive help with a programming assignment.

The subject now reads "LOL, have you guys ever watched "Zatoichi"???!121!".

Much of #compsci.ca's early history is shrouded in mystery. Nobody is quite sure the exact time when it was created, but rumour has it that [[Coutsos]] was its founder, although he did not begin to regularly attend it until quite some time later. Its first regular inhabitants were [[wtd]] and a mysterious lurker named [[Ultrahex]], who doesn't seem to be a bona fide member of the CompSci.ca community, although he's always in the channel.
Things took off sometime in early 2005, when a wave of members, including [[Hikaru79]], [[Coutsos]], [[Cervantes]], and [[Gandalf]] started regularly attending the channel. At present, #compsci.ca has a regular population of about seven, give or take, although it is subject to occasional flurries of activity, often when the moon is full.

==Daily Life==

Much of #compsci.ca's time is spent in utter silence (while its members spend time in deep personal reflection and thought), broken periodically by outbursts of conversation, instruction, and wierdness. Hilarity often ensues. On a good day, [[wtd]] can be observed teaching some interesting, mind-blowing new concept.

==The Future==

The future for #compsci.ca is looking bright, as it recieves more and more attention in the compsci.ca community, particularly through the siggies and evangelism of [[Cervantes]], [[Coutsos]], and [[Hikaru79]]. With any luck, it will soon be as integral a part of the compsci.ca experience as the forum has come to be.

[[Hacker Dan]] has made plans to integrate a Java-based IRC client that will send users to the channel directly from the forums. The feature is planned to be included in the new forum software, [[V3]], that hopefully will be completed over the 2005/2006 Christmas break.

Duckfest was sparked during a spirited conversation in compsci's very own [[IRC]] chatroom.

I added the eyepatch to the "Buccaneer" duck, and uploaded it. I created a signature to go with it. By the next day, Coutsos had finished his [[ninja]] duck, which was modified from the buccaneer. A sort of tradition started by [[Cervantes]] with his "Buccaneer" duck, was to include a phrase in his signature following the format of:

I suggested that I would delete all posts in that thread by non-ducklings, but that turned out not to be necessary: within a few days, we had a good portion of active CompSci.ca members with duck avatars, including [[Tony]], who had previously held his [[devil avatar]] for all eternity. An old practice among online communities in which nerds argued over who had the best [[avatar]] in use for that month. It was very common for people to change avatars frequently, either indicating issues with self perception, or just randomly stumbling upon images deemed "cooler" than their current. Standard procedure dictated that a poll was made with options for different well known members of the community. After a pre-determined period of time (a week was normal, logically it would be less than a month) the poll would end and the winner was declared to be the member who received the most votes.

This was the last known Avatar of the Month Award thread on the [[Compsci.ca]] forums. Though there were many familiar names entered this time, the mood had changed dramatically from the previous contests. Most noticeable was the drastic change in Mazer's enthusiasm for the whole affair and wanted to leave it altogether. In the end, Paul Bian was the self proclaimed winner, but has yet to receive any kind of award.

== Conspiracy Theory ==
When it became public knowledge that no winner of the Avatar of the Month Award had ever actually received an award, fear and panic began to spread, and with them, so did suspicion. Members began to develop theories as to what could be going on behind their backs. For instance, it seemed very stranged to a number of people that the only time an Avatar of the Month Award styled thread popped up was between the months of January and December. Some came to the conclusion that there never really was an award. Even though a picture of the award is available for anyone to see on the [[Compsci.ca]] forum, many argue that it looks like an obvious CG fake. Some believe that the whole contest was a trick played by the administrators to collect all of the money the members gambled and spend it on legal copies of Turing.
