Past Avatars
Cervantes' avatars used to always have some correlation back to the name "Cervantes". This was usually in the form of adding a bit of pirate to the avatar, with the exception of Buddy Cervantes, which was a mix between an image of Miguel de Cervantes and Buddy Jesus. Since using the Boss from Dilbert, this rule has been relaxed greatly.
Forces
Forces is an original genre game, written in Turing by Windsurfer (Adam Bielinski). It is considered to be one of the best examples of Turing developed games, rivaling Coutsos's Evasive Maneuvers.

About Forces
You are a small circle controlled by the mouse. You make sparkles to hurl at enemies that try to run and collide with you. There are 6 different and distict enemies.

Applications Post and 2006 Submission

Guide to Playing Forces
*You control a small spherical ball of pulsating energy. To move about the infinite space, move the mouse around the window. If you go outside of the window, the game will pause. You can also pause the game by pressing ESC on the keyboard.
**To create sparkles, press A or left-click.
**To repel sparkles, press D or right-click.
**To attract sparkles, press S or middle-click.
*The faster a sparkle is moving, the more damage an enemy receives by getting hit by it.

Special Powers
*To use Special Powers press the Spacebar.
**To switch your active special power, press Alt or the letter 'B'.

; Force Vortex : A swirling frenzy of chaotic destruction. A favourite of many.
; Force Spray : Super-fast sparkles explode in all directions, leaving short work of most enemies
; Force Repel : Repels all enemies, making you practically invincible while using it. It also repels sparkles much stronger than normal.
; Force Lightning : The favourite of the evil genius. Huge destruction to the closest foes, not to mention some health leaching.

Enemies
There are 6 enemies in the game, of varying speeds, health, and AI.

Avatar Themes consist of a set of avatars for various users, all following a common theme. The theme is decided upon in the IRC Channel.

Members
Mazer and Cervantes make a new theme in the first few days of each month. Others will sometimes join, such as Hikaru79 and Cornflake.

Mazer's avatars are often a Ninja'd version of something in the theme, while Cervantes' avatars are always Pirated (oh, oh, pun!).

History
Pythong
Turns out alot of people type "Pythong" when they mean to type "Python" and somebody decided to take advantage of it.

What the Duck?
The biggest, avatar theme was DuckFest.

The Baldur's Gate Revolution
The next avatar theme, of Cervantes' creation, was the NPC's from Baldur's Gate. Cervantes took Minsc, Cornflake Edwin, and El Comandante Garrick.

Chuck Norris
In December 2005, Cervantes and Mazer made Chuck Norris avatars.

Penny Arcade Violence
In January 2006, Cervantes and Mazer made avatars involving violence in Penny Arcade.

Calvin and Hobbes
In February 2006, Hikaru79, Mazer, and Cervantes made avatars of Calvin and Hobbes. Hikaru79 had a Calvin and Hobbes avatar for a long time, and had promised to partake in some of the previous avatar themes, though he never did. So, Cervantes and Mazer brought this month's avatar theme to Hikaru79.

Actors
March 2006's avatar theme was actors or characters from movies.

Hello Kitty
To go along with the April Fools joke of 2006, some users (without their consent) changed their avatars to a Hello Kitty theme.

Bill Gates
Aside from the one day Hello Kitty event, April 2006's avatar theme was Bill Gates, since he is so loved by everyone in the CompSci.ca community. This was Mazer's and Cervantes' April Fool's joke extended for one month. As a further joke, they switched the ninja/pirate rule: Cervantes used a ninja avatar made by Mazer while Mazer used a pirate avatar made by Cervantes.

Ruby
For May 2006, Mazer mouse-drew an avatar for himself and another for Cervantes, both of which involved a ruby.

Void
For June 2006, Mazer and Cervantes took a break. That's not to say that they did not change their avatars. The removed the Ruby avatars and replaced them with nothing. No avatar.

Bunny Suicides
For July 2006, several members took their avatars from Bunny Suicides.

The #compsci.ca channel on IRC is where all the cool members are hanging out. Chances are, if you're not there, you're missing something exciting and important.

To join the CompSci.ca IRC community, you need an IRC Client. We recommend X-Chat. Join any of the servers and channels described below.

Networks
CompSci.ca's own IRC Network
Server: irc.compsci.ca

Main Channel: #compsci.ca

Off Topic Channel: #compsci.ca-chat

This new network was formed by (in no particular order) Hacker_Dan, md, timmytheturtle, Hikaru79, TheFerret, and rdrake. You can join either the server above, or one of the following leaf servers (excluding irc.compsci.ca, which is a hub):
*irc.compsci.ca (Hacker_Dan)
*nadia.irc.compsci.ca (md/cornflake)
*melchior.irc.compsci.ca (timmytheturtle)
*ferret.irc.compsci.ca (TheFerret)
*darkmatter.irc.compsci.ca:16667 (rdrake/cartoon_shark)
Of course, the owners of the servers are also your friendly neighbourhood IRCops.

Joining a server near you *might* improve your latency; at least with those who are also near you. The server's are located as follows:
*irc.compsci.ca -> Thunder Bay
*nadia.irc.compsci.ca -> Ottawa
*melchior.irc.compsci.ca -> Kingston
*ferret.irc.compsci.ca -> Sarnia
*darkmatter.irc.compsci.ca -> Oshawa

History
Of The Main Channel
Much of #compsci.ca's early history is shrouded in mystery. Nobody is quite sure the exact time when it was created, but rumour has it that Coutsos was its founder, although he did not begin to regularly attend it until quite some time later. Its first regular inhabitants were wtd and a mysterious lurker named Ultrahex, who though a member of compsci does not seem to ever post on the forums. Things took off sometime in early 2005, when a wave of members, including Hikaru79, Coutsos, Cervantes, and Gandalf started regularly attending the channel. At present, #compsci.ca has a regular population of about ten, give or take, although it is subject to occasional flurries of activity, often when the moon is full.

As of April 15th, 2006, #compsci.ca is for CompSci.ca and programming related discussion. Excessive off topic discussion is to be held in #compsci.ca-chat.

Of The Self-taught Programming Channel
This channel was thought of on the forums by wtd on December 14, 2005. The main interest of this new channel is Ruby and O'Caml. This channel is not for the people who are taught programming in high school but for the people who self-teach it. When wtd announced it, there was a great cheer for wtd since he created the channel for the rest of the users to use and ask questions about.

Of The Compsci.ca Chat Channel
Founded in April 15th, 2006 during the Great IRC Crackdown of 2006, it was designed to reduce much of the spam going on in the #compsci.ca main room.

This new channel is a place for more relaxed chat, the old is for more CompSci.ca related discussion and computer science in general. Programming, operating systems, etc., it's all welcome in #compsci.ca. If you are going to spam, please join #compsci.ca-chat. If you spam too much, you will be devoiced and/or kicked.

Daily Life
Much of #compsci.ca's time is spent in utter silence (while its members spend time in deep personal reflection and thought), broken periodically by outbursts of conversation, instruction, and weirdness. Hilarity often ensues. Confusion can become rampant when the mature members take to stealing each other's nicknames (see Coutsos Identity Crisis). On a good day, wtd can be observed teaching some interesting, mind-blowing new programming concept.

Ocasionally if you are really lucky you'll witness something as bizzare as this wonderful event.

The Future
The future for #compsci.ca is looking bright, as it receives more and more attention in the compsci.ca community, particularly through the siggies and evangelism of Cervantes, Coutsos, and Hikaru79. With any luck, it will soon be as integral a part of the compsci.ca experience as the forum has come to be.

Hacker Dan has integrated a Java-based IRC client that will send users to the channel directly from the forums. The feature is currently included in the alpha version of V3.
Cervanteshttp://wiki.compsci.ca/index.php?title=CervantesCervantes2006-05-07T23:16:16Z
Cervantes: avatar cycle

Who is Cervantes?
Cervantes is a regular on the CompSci.ca forums and in the IRC channel. He introduced himself in the Official hello world thread like so:

"Ahoy maties. I be Cervantes, and my hobbies include the following:
*Rape and Pillage
*Death and Destruction
*Sailing the High Seas

If ye be so inclined as to join me on my expeditions, ye must be the sole reason for the evacuation of an entire town population greater than 50, ye must never have been in prison, ye must kill a ninja, and ye must not say "Shiver me Timbres" like that creepy Paul Bian character."

The Name
Cervantes originally got his name from the pirate in Soul Calibur, which he played on the Sega Dreamcast. Since then, he has discovered Miguel de Cervantes, who he also thinks is quite cool.

Cervantes' name was first degraded by TokenHerbz, who called him "Canvas". After being severly reprimanded, TokenHerbz did not learn his lesson: He went on to call Cervantes other grotesque variations.

Academics
Cervantes is currently a grade 12 student attending Newmarket High School, in the Greater Toronto Area. He is going to University next year, and his first choice is currently Applied mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He is also looking at Engineering Physics at University.

Sports
Cervantes has played soccer since he was 7 years old. He entered the rep system two years later, and has played on some fairly high calibur teams, such as Glen Shields. He is playing badminton quite seriously; Cervantes also enjoys cycling.

Music
Cervantes likes the older music. The Rock & Roll of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly; the 60's pop of The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Band; the rockin' folk of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Dire Straits; the pyschedalia of Yes and Jimi Hendrix; and the classic rock of various others, including Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fleetwood Mac, CCR, The Guess Who/Bachman Turner Overdrive, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, old Rolling Stones, Supertramp, The Who, and Eric Clapton.

Cervantes greatly dislikes rap and doom/death metal. Punk is pretty high up there, too.
Past Avatars
Cervantes' avatars must always have some correlation back to the name "Cervantes". This is usually in the form of adding a bit of pirate to the avatar, with the exception of Buddy Cervantes, which was a mix between an image of Miguel de Cervantes and Buddy Jesus.

Who is Mazer?
Mazer is a proud Greek man studying computer science at the University of Windsor. He is one of the earliest remaining members of CompSci.ca, though his existance is woven in fog. Being a ninja, Mazer tries to remain as stealthy as possible. He has achieved this through numerous name changes and by his ordinary rank on CompSci.ca, despite the fact that he is a moderator. Mazer is the original creator of the IRC channel. He is the author of Evasive Maneuvers. He is a leader in the monthly Avatar Themes.

The Name
Mazer's CompSci.ca name began as "Mazer", then it was later changed to "Coutsos", which happens to be his last name. He goes by either "Coutsos" or more prevalently "niko" on the IRC channel. In early 2006, he changed his CompSci.ca name back to "Mazer", creating a vast deal of confusion.
Cervanteshttp://wiki.compsci.ca/index.php?title=Avatar_ThemesAvatar Themes2006-05-06T23:52:34Z
Cervantes:

Avatar Themes consist of a set of avatars for various users, all following a common theme. The theme is decided upon in the IRC Channel.

Members
Mazer and Cervantes make a new theme in the first few days of each month. Others will sometimes join, such as Hikaru79 and Cornflake.

Mazer's avatars are often a Ninja'd version of something in the theme, while Cervantes' avatars are always Pirated (oh, oh, pun!).

History
Pythong
What the Duck?
The biggest, avatar theme was DuckFest.

The Baldur's Gate Revolution
The next avatar theme, of Cervantes' creation, was the NPC's from Baldur's Gate. Cervantes took Minsc, Cornflake Edwin, and El Comandante Garrick.

Public Version: Start of next school year, September 1st (estimate only)

User Requests
Add modifications and other things that you would like to see in V3:

Added
*Amailer: Merge posts commands for mods
*Amailer: Tutorial rating system
*Cervantes: Quick Reply box
*Martin: Add an RSS feed option for various forums. (Can you say awesome?) Yes ADDED but buggy
*Martin: Timed bans. Like, so I can ban someone for three days and when they login it'd say You have been banned (by Martin) for whatever reason. There is <x> much time remaining. Then I wouldn't have to feel so guilty.
*Martin: Get rid of the stupid 'You have a message!' sound that plays and makes the page layout go nuts. ADDED in v2 as well
*Rizzix: Allow for moderator feedback: aka tutorial rejection. This will help improve the quality of tutorials available on compsci.
*Amailer: (Maybe) create a system similar to Gallery2 A image system like it has be added but not that.
*Martin: Buddy list to make finding people easier when you want to PM them.
*Tony: wiki like bbcode linking
*Cervantes: Link to Bit Log in profiles (only visible to that user, such as Attachment Control Panel, or mods)
::Done but in a new usercp system. Same idea but better.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: Time of last log in, on the profile page.
::I think this is vissable to every one, tho it could be mods only.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Registration that registers you both on the wiki and compsci.ca with the same account.
::Added but buggy for now. Also set up for testing with v2.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Fix the post boxes to fill the entire screen width wise. It's not that hard, and it makes things so much nicer.
::This may not be posiable in V3 due to a difrent layout for post boxes, i will look in to it tho.
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Added but was not so easy as you may think to do.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:40, 26 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: An easy way of quoting multiple people so that it shows their name above the quote (ie. one solution would be the quote button, except make it show in the "Topic Review" below the "Post a Reply" box).

In Development
*Hacker Dan: Automated security systems
*Martin: Fix firefox glow May not be possible
:Then can we just get rid of it, or at least disable the colours for the name that are impossible/difficult to see on real web browsers (such as white)?
:--Martin 22:47, 5 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Tutorial link to wiki Tutorials page
*Hikaru79: Not having edits, count towards your post/minute timer (so you can edit posts right after you made them if you noticed a problem).
*rizzix: List users by rank, where the rank is the bits/posts ratio.
*rizzix: Support for user projects: Homepage, CVS, Bugtracker, Development timeline graphs, etc. Partly Added, the CVS part, partly
:Subversion, not CVS... please.
:--Martin 22:47, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::Acuatly it is subversion not CVS that i added, my bad =p
::--65.39.11.90 11:08, 7 February 2006 (PST)

Considering
*rizzix: Support for user project bounties.
*rizzix: Improved award system. Make the awards a little more visible, i.e. not hidden deep within the user's profile.
:It would be cool if at the top right of your post (to the left of the edit button) there was a list of clickable 16x16 icons representing the awards. Each award could have a description attached to it, like - 'awarded to so and so for winning this contest on this day.' Probably kind of time consuming to add though.
:Martin 00:31, 1 February 2006 (PST)
::Cool maybe but it whould make the posts to corwed with infromation and start looking bad, esptaly if some users had many awards
::--24.109.165.77 10:19, 4 February 2006 (PST)
:::In that case, it could be the most recent five awards or whaever.
:::--Martin 02:50, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::In the profile maybe, but right on the persons posts seems a bit much. Tho i could posbliy make a system for the user to put them in there sig. Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 14:38, 5 February 2006 (PST)
:::::Instead, maybe just a single trophy button with a number beside it showing the number of trophies that the user has. Like: Y(3) (with the Y being a picture of a trophy or something)
:::::--Martin 16:49, 5 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: A WYSIWYG editor, for those who don't like using bbcode or wiki
*Martin: Code snippits section where users can submit complete code designed to be used with other people's applications (thus making it easy for people looking for a certain feature to find it).
*Cervantes: Change the character limit in signatures. From what I can tell, it's currently a limit before BBCode tags are applied. Having lots of colour and links may make a single sentance too long. Also, no images in sigs.
::This may be hard to conrtol BBCode/HTML wise, and serveral users incuding my self use images in there sigs in ways that are not bothersoom to most users.
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)

Rejected
*Amailer: Google Integrated Search so that it will take alot less time to search and you'll be able to get better results.
:: I like it in theory but it could cause the bot problems we had b4 to come back. Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 14:38, 5 February 2006 (PST)
*Amailer: Democracy MOD 0.1.4 (reputation + warnings + reports) Difrent mod being used for same thing
*Martin: Hookers. Added....i mean WTF???
*rizzix: Allow for wiki sytle editing, as an alternative to bbcode. I don't know about that one....
*rizzix: Give the tutorial's author bits/month for x number of years, based on the rating his tutorial has received (since we already have the rating system implemented). This will help improve the number of quality articles we have here on compsci, and will truly reflect the rank of the user.
::I am planing on having a bits for rating system but it will be based on some difrent math
::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
*Amailer: Since you guys are removing the edit button because you don't know what the origional content was, how about making a system, similar to wikies which has the edit history? No need for it to be able to un-do it all, but yeah, you would be able to check what has been edited. (you can just put the diffrent versions insted of the + and - thigns)
::We are not removing the edit buttion
::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: A way for normal users to flag a topic that is spam/abusive/whatever. Just a flag this topic button, and then the administrators could get a list of all flagged topics. Administrators could then deal with the topic and remove the flag afterwards. Also, hookers.
::All ready added......other then the hookers....
::Hacker Dan --Hacker Dan 08:41, 11 February 2006 (PST)
*Iker: We need more cowbell
::We need more what now? Cowbell?
::Hacker Dan --24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
*Iker: An "auto lock" on all topics older then x days. This way, we don't have to worry about new people not reading the rules, and none of us have to bitch at them for doing it :)
::You know, um I thought the reason why forums keept the old posts was because people can come back to them; why do we flame people when they post in old topics? Unless the topic has already been solved (or disucssion was over). Suppose it was a help topic, and a person just signed up and knew the answer (the topic didn't get a proper answer when it was made)- so isn't the user allowed to post in it?
::--Amailer 14:21, 11 February 2006 (PST)
:::This option will be aviable to the staff for some forums but i do not plan on excuiting it just yet.
:::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::::Amailer - the problem is that people aren't adding to the discussion. Every post in an old topic I've seen has been something like "Hey, nice work!"
::::--Martin 18:26, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*Cervantes: Commenting for changing bits
:: A bits log for sure but i don't know about making a comeeting section for every bits chage, i think that is more for what PMing is for. Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 14:38, 5 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: Improved tutorial writing system: provides the ability to work on tutorials in offline mode, (a publishing system). The ability take a tutorial offline, edit it, improve it, and re-publish it. Force all tutorials to be approved by any moderator before it is displayed online. Not going to happen unless some one whonts to write the offline software and backend script to handel post uploads
::That is not what I meant. By offline I mean you take it off display, and put it into a Tutorial box or something. It is basically a publishing system. Do reconsider.
::--rizzix 11:39, 5 February 2006 (PST)
:::I am considering it, tho it may make things more complicated. --24.109.165.77 14:32, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::User will have a notepad where they can write anything they whont and store it in there usercp.
::::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
:::::All good, now can we "publish" those "notes" as tutorials? Also, if a mod rejects a tutorial, make sure it goes back into his cp. =)
:::::--rizzix 17:07, 22 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: In-place post editing. That is, display the whole page as it would normally show up when viewing posts, but make the post marked for editing, editable. ( hint: AJAX )
::AJAX is gr8 and all but can some times overly complicate things. Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 14:38, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::: It makes things simpler on the user end. (c'mon stop complaining :p) Of course, no rush here, you can safely move it to V4 :)
::: --rizzix 19:14, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::More work needs to be done in the filed of joining phpbb and ajax, i could see this in the futtuer for v4 since we whont to rewrite everything.
::::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)

Requested
*Martin: When editing posts, default to silent edit when it's someone else's post, but to a normal (tagged) edit when editing your own posts.
::I thought it all ready worked like this, lol. I will look in to it....
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Probably the best idea ever - switch the post boxes to use a fixed width font. Writing code in them as it stands is very difficult.
::How whould a fixed width make writing code easyer? Or do u mean a way to allow for tabing and other formating like in most editors?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Because it would make spaces lines line up properly, so if you need to type a five line code snippit you don't have to worry about your comments not being aligned and such. Maybe an option in the user's profile to choose the editing font?
:::--Martin 16:01, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: Link or redirect wiki discussions to the respective topic in a Wiki forum in phpbb.
::I am not shure how you mean for this to be done, could you give an example of some kind?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Yea. I'll give you two ideas (but you can definitely improve on them), choose either one:
:::1) If the discussions tab is clicked the first time, then redirect the user to a page that asks him if he wants to create a new discussion in the phpbb section. If he accepts then create a new topic (e.g. for our V3 page it could be "V3 Talk") in a "Wiki" forum. Yea you would need to create a whole new forum for Wiki discussions. The next time the discussions tab is clicked it automatically redirects to the respective topic ("V3 Talk") in the respective forum ("Wiki").
:::2) Similar to the first one, where you prompt the user if he/she wants to create a new discussion if it's clicked for the first time etc, but now print out a small non-editable-blurb under the discussions tab that show the last 10 posts from the respective Topic ("V3 Talk") in the "Wiki" forum. Under that blurb have a quick reply box. =)
:::--rizzix 16:59, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*Cervantes: Invisible posts. Well, not completely invisible. Posts that only moderators can see. Perhaps only moderators can make them, or perhaps it would be beneficial to allow all users to make them. This would sort of act like flagging a topic, as Martin was suggesting, except that it allows for a discussion of what to be done with a topic. You know, those topics that are in between the "delete/move to hiding place" and "leave alone", those topics that you just don't quite know what to do with. Invisible posts may be grouped together at the end of the regular user discussion, interspersed within the discussion, or occupy an invisible thread. Threads with invisible posts should be coloured differently or some such to easily distinguish them from the rest of the threads.
::Well currently we just move it to the evidence folder =/
::--rizzix 14:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::I thought that was what the staff forums where for. If there is a questional tpoic the idea is to post in the staff forum about it.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:29, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::I'm telling you guys, stealth bans are where it's at. If a stealth banned user makes a post, the post gets entered into the database but is marked as stealth banned. Users only see posts that aren't stealth banned (although stealth banned users can see their own posts as well). It'd be awesome. All the stupid people will go nuts trying to figure out why everyone's ignoring them. Actually, having a killfile would be cool.
::::--Martin 17:09, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::Rizzix/Hacker Dan, there are some topics that walk the edge between "leave them alone" and "send to evidence folder". Those topics where the poster is an ass and part of you wants to leave him out to dry, and the other part of you feels guilty for doing so. Those topics where the poster is still receiving help, but users are spamming the topic like there's no tommorow. What do you do? You could move it to the evidence folder for staff discussion, then move it back if that's the decision, but in the meantime, what has the poster gone and done? Posted another topic, of course! Alternatively, we could make a thread ourselves in the evidence folder to discuss, leaving it where it is for the time being. But isn't that too much of a hassel? V3 isn't about absolute necessity, it's about filling its users with trinkets and joys from across the world! (wide web).
:::::--Cervantes 17:55, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::::And... timed stealth bans! The user doesn't even know that they were banned - it'd be great.
::::::--Martin 18:23, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::::Yes Martin, they would be good. I guess you're flaunting them so madly in this request because it's essentially setting all the stealth banned user's posts to be invisible posts visible only to himself?
:::::::--Cervantes 16:33, 20 February 2006 (PST)
:::::Cervantes what i ment is that when i come arocess a post that i do not know what to do with i make a post in the staff forum (not move the post in question) or message other mods (threw, msn, irc or pm) for there option. I think that screct posts whould make things overcomplicated and screct bans seems kind of crazy to me. Maybe somthing making so they can not post in a speficed thread or fourm.
:::::--Hacker Dan 22:48, 20 February 2006 (PST)
*Cervantes: The quoting system in v3 now is nice, but it led me to one more improvement: automatic linking to the post the quotation came from. This would be okay for quoting within threads, but is even more useful when you quote someone from another thread (click the quote button the copy and paste the BBCode into the other thread's reply box).
::Arg, i just remvoed this since it was casuing problems. I might be able to readd but not bugy.
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
*Cervantes: Turing Syntax highlighting is great, thus far. Would it be possible, though, to have keywords link to certain places, as the Java one does? For example, the "flexible" keyword should link to the tutorial on Flexible Arrays. It would be good if this could be done dynamically, so wherever you're storing the tutorials and articles, it finds the appropriate tutorial/article in there.
::I very easly could make it link to somthing...unfronly the dynamick tutoral thing whould be hard. How about to sreaching the forums for turing and the keyword?
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
:::Better than nothing. Just searching the tutorials section would be good. Alternatively, the mods could manually keep the links up to date.
:::---Cervantes 10:31, 12 March 2006 (PST)
*Cervantes: I think I might have mentioned this somewhere, but I can't remember where. Links on "Bits", "Karma", and "Posts" (whatever shows under a users avatar in a post) to either the FAQ or the wiki sites on these topics. That would lessen the number of people asking, "What are bits for?!"
*Cervantes: LaTeX!
*Cervantes: Optional line numbering when posting code, sort of like rafb has it (when highlighting code to copy and paste, the line numbers should not be highlighted/copied).

Who is Hikaru79?
Hikaru79 is a regular on the CompSci.ca forums and even more so in the IRC channel.

Hikaru79 is one of the most sane regulars of the IRC channel: wtd spent an age as an evil hobbit, named Lotho; Coutsos suffers from identity crisises, and Cervantes is obsessed with a mentally unstable, fictional character. md has moments of stability but is on the whole crazy. Gandalf is still traumatized by his defeat in the Minsc-Gandalf duel.

Why the Name?
Hikaru79 comes from Hikaru No Go, which is related to Go. The 79 is a random number and holds no further significance.

Character and Interests
Hikaru79 is possibly the nicest person one could ever meet. He is generous, fun, trusting, and always willing to help. He's also always good for an evil scheme or two. But those who partake in evil schemes often have evil scheming on them.

Hikaru79 has many computer related interests, which include trying to read the source for AI of games such as Go. Go is another one of Hikaru79's passions: he claims that when one begins to play Go, that individual will forfeit all hopes of doing well in school or other things, for it is highly addictive.

Hikaru79 enjoys Anime as much as the standard CompSci.ca member. He downloads loads of Anime and other things, including e-books. Hikaru79 claims that he has hundreds upon hundreds of gigabytes of files. He may even have reached the much fabelled terabyte.

Academics
Hikaru79 attends Vincent Massey Secondary School (VMSS, also EMSS: Evasive Maneuvers Secondary School), and is currently in grade 12. He intends to attent the University of Waterloo for computer science.

Hikaru79 is a rare specimen, in that he has combined his regular computer science and math/science courses with French. Curious.

Cervantes' avatars must always have some correlation back to the name "Cervantes". This is usually in the form of adding a bit of pirate to the avatar, with the exception of Buddy Cervantes, which was a mix between an image of Miguel de Cervantes and Buddy Jesus.

:This article is a composition from the original Wikipedia article (that has been deleted) and from losethegame.com.

The Game is a name commonly used for an abstract mental game in which the object is to forget about the existence of the game itself. This social phenomenon is played by an increasing number of people throughout the world and is inherently memetic.

Rules
The Game is played on three basic rules.

# You are playing The Game.
# Whenever you think about The Game, you lose.
# Whenever you lose, you must tell everyone

Rule 1
Everyone is playing the game. They always have been and always will be. Participation in a game requires neither consent nor awareness of its existence.

Only when someone has told you about The Game does it become possible to lose, unless you independently create The Game.

The creator of The Game was the first person to realise he was playing, and therefore the first person to lose.

Rule 2
Loss is temporary, as soon as you forget you are playing, you start winning again.

It is possible for people to simultaneously lose The Game.

It is not easy to trick others into losing. Possible strategies usually involve leaving somekind of permanent reminder that others will see long after you have forgotten The Game since making it, e.g. answerphone messages, MSN pictures, forum posts, signs etc.

Rule 3
You must tell everyone possible that you have lost, and explain the rules to anyone who does not realise they are playing.

Rule Variations
Rule 2 is open to a number of different interpretations.

*The broadest interpretation is that any thought involving The Game causes loss. This is hard to define, for example, does thinking about this article count as thinking about The Game? This interpretation also makes it relatively easy to accidently break Rule 3, by thinking about The Game without realising you have lost.

*Another interpreation is that you lose whenever you remember you are playing The Game. This is subtley different from the previous interpretation, it involves becoming aware that you are a participant in The Game. It is still possible to do this without realising that you have lost, and hence accidently break Rule 3.

*A third interpretation is that you lose only when you realise you have lost. This seemingly paradoxical version of Rule 2 is often chosen by experienced players as it makes accidental cheating impossible. This is because it is possible to think about, and even discuss, The Game without a realising you have lost.

Another aspect of Rule 2 that is commonly disputed is whether you should lose if you have been reminded of The Game by someone else's loss.

Origins
The ultimate origins of The Game are unclear, and may never be known. A number of people have claimed to be the creator and, although unlikely, it is possible that The Game was created independently at different times and in different places. At The Game Tree, a website dedicated to tracking The Game back to its originator, the longest recorded player of The Game is one Mike Codling, who claims to have been playing since 1993. He was told that it originated as the East Finchley game":

:"Three young men, following a heavy night out in the west end, accidentally took the wrong branch on the northern line, and found themselves stranded at East Finchley. As they had no money, they decided to wait on the platform until the first morning service to take them back into town. To help the time pass, they decided to play a game, and one suggested that they should try to forget about where they were, and that they were playing a game, and the first one to think about the game, or about East Finchley, was the loser."

However, neither the provenance of the quote nor the identity of Mike Codling can be verified with credible evidence.

Strategies
It is almost impossible to take conscious steps to avoiding loss without losing. Common strategies focus on increasing the loss of others, such as placing reminders of The Game, like notes saying "The Game" or "You Lose", in locations where other players are likely to come across them. Though the person, in placing the notes, must think about The Game while doing so, and therefore lose, the person calculates that he or she will have forgotten about The Game by the time others find the note, and will therefore cause the other players to lose without losing again themself. Of course, for the player to realize this has worked, he or she would have to lose again. In schools where The Game is played, it is not uncommon to see such reminders written on class whiteboards, or pinned onto notice boards for unsuspecting students to view.

Criticisms
Many people who come across The Game find it pointless or absurd. Its significant differences from other games make it hard to understand in itself, as well as to why people would choose to play it. The fact that it is hard to score, difficult to devise strategies for, and that there is no final victory, means that it is frowned upon by more competetive game-players. Some would argue that it is not a game at all. Whether there is a choice in playing or not is also hotly debated.

Avatar Themes consist of a set of avatars for various users, all following a common theme. The theme is decided upon in the IRC Channel.

Members
Coutsos and Cervantes make a new theme in the first few days of each month. Others will sometimes join, such as Hikaru79 and Cornflake.

Coutsos' avatars are often a Ninja'd version of something in the theme, while Cervantes' avatars are always Pirated (oh, oh, pun!).

History
Pythong
Turns out alot of people type "Pythong" when they mean to type "Python" and somebody decided to take advantage of it.

What the Duck?
The first, and biggest, avatar theme was DuckFest.

The Baldur's Gate Revolution
The next avatar theme, of Cervantes' creation, was the NPC's from Baldur's Gate. Cervantes took Minsc, Cornflake Edwin, and El Comandante Garrick.
Chuck Norris
In December 2005, Cervantes and Coutsos made Chuck Norris avatars.

Penny Arcade Violence
In January 2006, Cervantes and Coutsos made avatars involving violence in Penny Arcade.

Calvin and Hobbes
In February 2006, Hikaru79, Coutsos, and Cervantes made avatars of Calvin and Hobbes. Hikaru79 had a Calvin and Hobbes avatar for a long time, and had promised to partake in some of the previous avatar themes, though he never did. So, Cervantes and Coutsos brought this month's avatar theme to Hikaru79.
Actors
March 2006's avatar theme was actors or characters from movies.
Hello Kitty
To go along with the April Fools joke of 2006, some users (without their consent) changed their avatars to a Hello Kitty theme.

::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: Time of last log in, on the profile page.
::I think this is vissable to every one, tho it could be mods only.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Registration that registers you both on the wiki and compsci.ca with the same account.
::Added but buggy for now. Also set up for testing with v2.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Fix the post boxes to fill the entire screen width wise. It's not that hard, and it makes things so much nicer.
::This may not be posiable in V3 due to a difrent layout for post boxes, i will look in to it tho.
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Added but was not so easy as you may think to do.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:40, 26 February 2006 (PST)

::--65.39.11.90 11:08, 7 February 2006 (PST)

::--24.109.165.77 10:19, 4 February 2006 (PST)
:::In that case, it could be the most recent five awards or whaever.
:::--Martin 02:50, 5 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Martin 16:49, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)

::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
Cowbell?
::Hacker Dan --24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
::--Amailer 14:21, 11 February 2006 (PST)
:::This option will be aviable to the staff for some forums but i do not plan on excuiting it just yet.
:::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::::Amailer - the problem is that people aren't adding to the discussion. Every post in an old topic I've seen has been something like "Hey, nice work!"
::::--Martin 18:26, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 11:39, 5 February 2006 (PST)
:::I am considering it, tho it may make things more complicated. --24.109.165.77 14:32, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::User will have a notepad where they can write anything they whont and store it in there usercp.
::::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--rizzix 17:07, 22 February 2006 (PST)
::: --rizzix 19:14, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::More work needs to be done in the filed of joining phpbb and ajax, i could see this in the futtuer for v4 since we whont to rewrite everything.
Requested
*Martin: When editing posts, default to silent edit when it's someone else's post, but to a normal (tagged) edit when editing your own posts.
::I thought it all ready worked like this, lol. I will look in to it....
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Probably the best idea ever - switch the post boxes to use a fixed width font. Writing code in them as it stands is very difficult.
::How whould a fixed width make writing code easyer? Or do u mean a way to allow for tabing and other formating like in most editors?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Because it would make spaces lines line up properly, so if you need to type a five line code snippit you don't have to worry about your comments not being aligned and such. Maybe an option in the user's profile to choose the editing font?
:::--Martin 16:01, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: Link or redirect wiki discussions to the respective topic in a Wiki forum in phpbb.
::I am not shure how you mean for this to be done, could you give an example of some kind?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::--rizzix 16:59, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 14:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::I thought that was what the staff forums where for. If there is a questional tpoic the idea is to post in the staff forum about it.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:29, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::--Martin 17:09, 19 February 2006 (PST)
(wide web).
::::::And... timed stealth bans! The user doesn't even know that they were banned - it'd be great.
::::::--Martin 18:23, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::::Yes Martin, they would be good. I guess you're flaunting them so madly in this request because it's essentially setting all the stealth banned user's posts to be invisible posts visible only to himself?
:::::::--Cervantes 16:33, 20 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Hacker Dan 22:48, 20 February 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
:::Better than nothing. Just searching the tutorials section would be good. Alternatively, the mods could manually keep the links up to date.
:::---Cervantes 10:31, 12 March 2006 (PST)

::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: Time of last log in, on the profile page.
::I think this is vissable to every one, tho it could be mods only.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Registration that registers you both on the wiki and compsci.ca with the same account.
::Added but buggy for now. Also set up for testing with v2.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Fix the post boxes to fill the entire screen width wise. It's not that hard, and it makes things so much nicer.
::This may not be posiable in V3 due to a difrent layout for post boxes, i will look in to it tho.
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Added but was not so easy as you may think to do.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:40, 26 February 2006 (PST)

::--24.109.165.77 10:19, 4 February 2006 (PST)
:::In that case, it could be the most recent five awards or whaever.
:::--Martin 02:50, 5 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Martin 16:49, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)

::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
::Hacker Dan--24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
Cowbell?
::Hacker Dan --24.109.165.77 18:12, 8 February 2006 (PST)
::--Amailer 14:21, 11 February 2006 (PST)
:::This option will be aviable to the staff for some forums but i do not plan on excuiting it just yet.
:::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::::Amailer - the problem is that people aren't adding to the discussion. Every post in an old topic I've seen has been something like "Hey, nice work!"
::::--Martin 18:26, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 11:39, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
:::::All good, now can we "publish" those "notes" as tutorials? Also, if a mod rejects a tutorial, make sure it goes back into his cp. =)
:::::--rizzix 17:07, 22 February 2006 (PST)
::: --rizzix 19:14, 5 February 2006 (PST)
::::More work needs to be done in the filed of joining phpbb and ajax, i could see this in the futtuer for v4 since we whont to rewrite everything.
::::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)

Requested
*Martin: When editing posts, default to silent edit when it's someone else's post, but to a normal (tagged) edit when editing your own posts.
::I thought it all ready worked like this, lol. I will look in to it....
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Probably the best idea ever - switch the post boxes to use a fixed width font. Writing code in them as it stands is very difficult.
::How whould a fixed width make writing code easyer? Or do u mean a way to allow for tabing and other formating like in most editors?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Because it would make spaces lines line up properly, so if you need to type a five line code snippit you don't have to worry about your comments not being aligned and such. Maybe an option in the user's profile to choose the editing font?
:::--Martin 16:01, 16 February 2006 (PST)
*rizzix: Link or redirect wiki discussions to the respective topic in a Wiki forum in phpbb.
::I am not shure how you mean for this to be done, could you give an example of some kind?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::--rizzix 16:59, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 14:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::I thought that was what the staff forums where for. If there is a questional tpoic the idea is to post in the staff forum about it.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:29, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::--Martin 17:09, 19 February 2006 (PST)
(wide web).
:::::--Cervantes 17:55, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::::And... timed stealth bans! The user doesn't even know that they were banned - it'd be great.
::::::--Martin 18:23, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::::Yes Martin, they would be good. I guess you're flaunting them so madly in this request because it's essentially setting all the stealth banned user's posts to be invisible posts visible only to himself?
:::::::--Cervantes 16:33, 20 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Hacker Dan 22:48, 20 February 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
:::Better than nothing. Just searching the tutorials section would be good. Alternatively, the mods could manually keep the links up to date.
:::---Cervantes 10:31, 12 March 2006 (PST)

::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: Time of last log in, on the profile page.
::I think this is vissable to every one, tho it could be mods only.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Registration that registers you both on the wiki and compsci.ca with the same account.
::Added but buggy for now. Also set up for testing with v2.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Fix the post boxes to fill the entire screen width wise. It's not that hard, and it makes things so much nicer.
::This may not be posiable in V3 due to a difrent layout for post boxes, i will look in to it tho.
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::Added but was not so easy as you may think to do.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:40, 26 February 2006 (PST)

::--65.39.11.90 11:08, 7 February 2006 (PST)

::I am not shure how you mean for this to be done, could you give an example of some kind?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::--rizzix 16:59, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 14:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::I thought that was what the staff forums where for. If there is a questional tpoic the idea is to post in the staff forum about it.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:29, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::--Martin 17:09, 19 February 2006 (PST)
(wide web).
:::::--Cervantes 17:55, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::::And... timed stealth bans! The user doesn't even know that they were banned - it'd be great.
::::::--Martin 18:23, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::::Yes Martin, they would be good. I guess you're flaunting them so madly in this request because it's essentially setting all the stealth banned user's posts to be invisible posts visible only to himself?
:::::::--Cervantes 16:33, 20 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Hacker Dan 22:48, 20 February 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
::--Hacker Dan 20:49, 11 March 2006 (PST)
:::Better than nothing. Just searching the tutorials section would be good. Alternatively, the mods could manually keep the links up to date.
*Martin: Get rid of the stupid 'You have a message!' sound that plays and makes the page layout go nuts. ADDED in v2 as well
*Martin: Buddy list to make finding people easier when you want to PM them.
*Tony: wiki like bbcode linking
*Cervantes: Link to Bit Log in profiles (only visible to that user, such as Attachment Control Panel, or mods)
::Done but in a new usercp system. Same idea but better.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Gandalf: Time of last log in, on the profile page.
::I think this is vissable to every one, tho it could be mods only.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Martin: Registration that registers you both on the wiki and compsci.ca with the same account.
::Added but buggy for now. Also set up for testing with v2.
::--Hacker Dan 00:09, 21 February 2006 (PST)
*Cornflake: Fix the post boxes to fill the entire screen width wise. It's not that hard, and it makes things so much nicer.
::This may not be posiable in V3 due to a difrent layout for post boxes, i will look in to it tho.
:::Added but was not so easy as you may think to do.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:40, 26 February 2006 (PST)

*rizzix: List users by rank, where the rank is the bits/posts ratio.
*rizzix: Support for user projects: Homepage, CVS, Bugtracker, Development timeline graphs, etc. Partly Added, the CVS part, partly
:::In that case, it could be the most recent five awards or whaever.
:::--Martin 02:50, 5 February 2006 (PST)
No need for it to be able to un-do it all, but yeah, you would be able to check what has been edited. (you can just put the diffrent versions insted of the + and - thigns)
*Martin: Probably the best idea ever - switch the post boxes to use a fixed width font. Writing code in them as it stands is very difficult.
::How whould a fixed width make writing code easyer? Or do u mean a way to allow for tabing and other formating like in most editors?
:::Because it would make spaces lines line up properly, so if you need to type a five line code snippit you don't have to worry about your comments not being aligned and such. Maybe an option in the user's profile to choose the editing font?
*rizzix: Link or redirect wiki discussions to the respective topic in a Wiki forum in phpbb.
::I am not shure how you mean for this to be done, could you give an example of some kind?
::--Hacker Dan 13:14, 16 February 2006 (PST)
:::--rizzix 16:59, 16 February 2006 (PST)
::--rizzix 14:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::I thought that was what the staff forums where for. If there is a questional tpoic the idea is to post in the staff forum about it.
:::--Hacker Dan 16:29, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::--Martin 17:09, 19 February 2006 (PST)
(wide web).
:::::--Cervantes 17:55, 19 February 2006 (PST)
::::::And... timed stealth bans! The user doesn't even know that they were banned - it'd be great.
::::::--Martin 18:23, 19 February 2006 (PST)
:::::::Yes Martin, they would be good. I guess you're flaunting them so madly in this request because it's essentially setting all the stealth banned user's posts to be invisible posts visible only to himself?
:::::::--Cervantes 16:33, 20 February 2006 (PST)
:::::--Hacker Dan 22:48, 20 February 2006 (PST)

He is proficient in the use of Turing, and has some experience with C++, JavaScript and Java, having touched upon many other languages. A regular user of the CompSci IRC channel, you can usually find him there sometime in the late afternoon.

Pythong
